How do I find the Perfect Gift for Family and Friends?
Since we live in a world of constant holidays and occasions I decided to help you with the sometimes difficult task of finding the perfect gift for those closest to you.
A task that should be simple but somehow leaves us racking our brain to come up with the perfect gift idea.
Don’t worry, you’re not the only one who finds gift giving to be a challenge.
I mean it is only shopping right? Then why is it so difficult?
It’s probably because we are not shopping for ourselves.
This means that it is going to take a bit more brain work to come up with a gift by putting yourself in the shoes of others.
By doing this, we can try and figure out what they would want for themselves.
Here is a simple holiday gift giving guide to help you on your gift giving journey and will ensure that your thoughtfulness is the true gift for every holiday.
Better to Give than to Receive
They say, ‘it’s better to give then to receive’ and I have always been a strong believer in this maxim.
There is something very special and deeply satisfying when giving someone a gift that that they truly enjoy and find useful.
There is a sincerity in the thought and effort that goes into selecting the perfect gift and it represents the time and effort that went into the process.
Below you can find a few tips to assist with the sometimes-daunting task of selecting a gift for a friend, relative, co-worker or loved one.
1. Stalk Their Social Media
Now I don’t encourage stalking, but in this case, I believe it’s for a good cause.
Social media should be the first place to look when trying to figure out one’s interests. After all, this is where people spend most of their waking moments.
Pay attention to the posts that people like or the people/brands they are following.
You can quickly and easily get a sense of what products, brands, or styles people enjoy by the posts that they ‘like’ or ‘comment’ on.
2. Make a List
Santa is not the only one who can benefit from making a list.
Here is a quick activity that you can complete to get a better sense of which gifts someone might like
Grab a pen and paper or your smartphone and make a list of all things that you think about when you think of the person you are shopping for – their characteristics, personality traits, hobbies, career, interests.
Are they a gamer, fashionista, movie buff, foodie, gym rat?
What are the annoying things they always rant about incessantly when spending time together?
This can help can give you a sense of which direction to go towards for gift giving.
Be mindful of what people mention during conversation. I often take mental note of things my family and friends enjoy and mention during the year. I later revisit these ideas during the holidays in order to select appropriate gifts.
3. Be Unique
Here at Savvy Gifts we pride ourselves in being unique, and you should too.
Maybe instead of just wrapping a physical gift and handing it to a person you can gift them with an experience that they’ll never forget.
Perhaps tickets to see their favorite artist, musician or Broadway show.
Sporting events are also a fun experience as well or maybe a relaxing trip to a local vineyard.
Just make sure you know the persons schedule in advance so you can select the appropriate date and time for the event.
4. The Perfect Gift that Keeps Giving
Another interesting option for finding the perfect gift can be a subscription service.
You can sign someone up for a quarterly or even annual subscription service for some of their favorite products.
Now your favorite person can receive reoccurring gifts month after month keeping them up to date on everything from fashion to their favorite wines or teas.
Some of the more established subscriptions services are Birchbox, Graze, Teabox, Chococurb etc.
A lot of clothing and accessory subscriptions have become popular recently and can be especially helpful to those might need some assistance in the fashion department.
5. Buy what they need
Once again this will take a little bit of thinking.
Take some time to think about the person and their career, daily schedule or hobbies.
Is there something that they need that can make their life a little easier or more comfortable?
Maybe a friend of your works outdoors in the cold and could use some cashmere socks.
Perhaps your wife has decided to go back to school and needs a new laptop.
I once bought a girlfriend a vacuum cleaner for her home because she didn’t have one and her home was super dusty – Not sure it was the most exciting gift to receive…
Which brings me to the next point, make sure the gift is not too practical.
6. Make the Perfect Gift
This option is usually reserved for children or the unemployed.
However, if creative enough the gift can still be enjoyed by the receiver without the gifter looking too stingy.
You can make someone their favorite meal or dessert or create coupons that can be redeemed for different services i.e. free massage, dinner etc.
Maybe a photo collage of favorite memories, write a poem or make a custom card.
Once again, if a gift is thoughtful, it does not necessarily have to be expensive.
7. The Perfect Gift for Coworkers and Acquaintances
When purchasing gifts for co-workers and acquaintances you probably don’t want to get something too personal unless you know them very well.
Especially since it might be part of a group situation like Secret Santa or White Elephant.
I’m sure Ted from accounting wouldn’t appreciate receiving a pair of personalized Speedos’ in front of the rest of your co-workers.
Obviously, you still want to put time and thought into coming up with a gift that they will appreciate but try to avoid anything that is potentially inappropriate.
Several years ago, I received my manger as the Secret Santa person I had to shop for.
At first, I was confused about what to purchase for him, especially because he was my manager and I wanted to make a good impression.
I started to think about the little I knew about him and the things that he enjoyed.
I remembered that he was a serial cigarette smoker and he looked forward to his countless cigarette breaks daily.
I decided to buy him a Zippo lighter that was personalized with his initials.
Sure, it costs $30 and the Secret Santa range was $25, but I have to say the extra 5 bucks was worth it because the gift was greatly appreciated.
My thoughtfulness may have even contributed as a factor in receiving my subsequent raise at work.
The Delivery of The Perfect Gift
Sometimes the delivery can be just as satisfying as the actual gift itself. Surprises can often go a long way in adding excitement to the process of gift giving.
In my family we have a tradition of wrapping gifts in several packages to extend the anticipation and excitement. We enjoy putting gifts in different boxes to shake things up.
For example, placing a brand-new iPhone in a calculator box or something equally as boring to trick the recipient.
Nothing is better than thinking you’re receiving something lame and it turns out to be something awesome!
I once received a digital camera from my uncle on Christmas and was exhilarated.
I found out shortly after that the camera belonged to someone else and he re-wrapped it quickly and handed it to me as a practical joke.
Needless to say I not only didn’t get a camera I was terribly embarrassed.
I don’t suggest that, it’s just cruel.
I hope everyone found the above information useful and I hope I didn’t make you work too hard. But trust me your family and friends will appreciate the time and effort you put into these exercises.
And if they don’t, you know what to get them next time….a gift card.
Although it’s not an exhaustive guide to every possible gift option available, I wanted to get your juices flowing a bit and get you thinking more creatively for the next occasion.
